The magical nature of Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi is known for its wonderful nature. The estuary of two rivers between the hills, snowy landscapes, forests, aurora borealis, and the right to roam freely in nature create pure northern magic. Rovaniemi offers several natural attractions for tourists, but finding the right destination is important.

  • In the dark, even a short path can be intimidating, and you can get lost in the forest. Short routes can be found, for example, in Ounasvaara and Napapiirin retkeilyalue. However, simply visiting a nearby forest can also be a rewarding experience.
  • Remember to wear appropriate gear. In winter, you need warm clothes and a light source. Take a headlamp with you, fully charge your cell phone, and use an app like Maastokartat to see where you are. Don’t forget to download the 112 app, which you can use to call for help and which will locate you.
  • Always take snacks and drinks with you, even for a short trip.
  • If you are not an experienced hiker, consider a guided hike.
  • Many hiking trails are only open in summer. If you plan to go on an excursion in winter, make sure the area is accessible by car. For more information, you can ask Pilke, which offers advisory services for hikers.
  • Please remember that although everyone has the right to roam in nature, you are not allowed to enter private yards. Finns value their privacy, and there is plenty of space in Lapland. You will definitely find a good place to enjoy nature without intruding on someone’s private property.

The Etiäinen website presents all hiking routes in the Rovaniemi area.
