Renting a car is often the easiest way to travel long distances. However, Lapland’s winter can surprise motorists. It’s crucial to familiarize yourself with winter driving, understand the effects of slipperiness and weather conditions on driving, and allow enough time for your journey.
Check out Liikenneturva’s instructions on winter driving.
Note at least the following:
- Plan your route carefully.
Choose the largest possible roads and avoid small roads, as they may not
be drivable in winter.
- Before starting to drive, clean
your car’s windshields, headlights, mirrors, roof, and wiper blades
thoroughly.
- Don’t rely too much on the
navigator; trust your eyes.
- Drive slowly enough to maintain
control of the car.
- Learn to use headlights (high
and low beam and fog lights) and understand when to use them.
- Keep a safe distance from the
car in front, as braking distances are long on icy roads.
- Get to know your car and find
out how to keep the windows defrosted.
- Even if you see reindeer,
northern lights, or other interesting sights, don’t stop in the middle of
the road. Find a safe place to pull over and ensure safety.
- Watch out for wild animals,
such as reindeer and moose, on the roads.
- If you plan to get out of the
car in the dark, remember that other motorists may not see you. Make
yourself visible with reflective vests, which can be bought inexpensively
in larger markets, and smaller reflectors are available almost everywhere.
