A safe visit to the Arctic region is the wish of every traveler. However, it is important to remember a few key points when moving around Rovaniemi and Lapland:
- If you rent a car, learn how to drive in winter conditions and allow enough time for travel.
- When walking, be cautious of slippery surfaces and only use designated footpaths. Never walk on the road except at crosswalks.
- During Kaamos, there is only a short period of daylight each day. Use reflectors so that motorists can see you. Reflectors are available in almost all shops and kiosks in Rovaniemi.
- Download the 112 app to your phone. You can use it to call the emergency center, and it will help locate you.
- Never walk on river ice unless a local guide gives you permission. River water flows under the ice, which can be very thin.
- Dress warmly. Locals wear layered clothing; even regular clothes are sufficient if you wear enough layers. Pay special attention to protecting your hands, feet, head, neck, and face.
