The magical nature of Rovaniemi

Rovaniemi is known for its wonderful nature. The estuary of two rivers between the hills, snowy landscapes, forests, aurora borealis, and the right to roam freely in nature create pure northern magic. Rovaniemi offers several natural attractions for tourists, but finding the right destination is important.

  • In the dark, even a short path can be intimidating, and you can get lost in the forest. Short routes can be found, for example, in Ounasvaara and Napapiirin retkeilyalue. However, simply visiting a nearby forest can also be a rewarding experience.
  • Remember to wear appropriate gear. In winter, you need warm clothes and a light source. Take a headlamp with you, fully charge your cell phone, and use an app like Maastokartat to see where you are. Don’t forget to download the 112 app, which you can use to call for help and which will locate you.
  • Always take snacks and drinks with you, even for a short trip.
  • If you are not an experienced hiker, consider a guided hike.
  • Many hiking trails are only open in summer. If you plan to go on an excursion in winter, make sure the area is accessible by car. For more information, you can ask Pilke, which offers advisory services for hikers.
  • Please remember that although everyone has the right to roam in nature, you are not allowed to enter private yards. Finns value their privacy, and there is plenty of space in Lapland. You will definitely find a good place to enjoy nature without intruding on someone’s private property.

The Etiäinen website presents all hiking routes in the Rovaniemi area.

Safe driving in winter conditions

Renting a car is often the easiest way to travel long distances. However, Lapland’s winter can surprise motorists. It’s crucial to familiarize yourself with winter driving, understand the effects of slipperiness and weather conditions on driving, and allow enough time for your journey.

Check out Liikenneturva’s instructions on winter driving.

Note at least the following:

  • Plan your route carefully. Choose the largest possible roads and avoid small roads, as they may not be drivable in winter.
  • Before starting to drive, clean your car’s windshields, headlights, mirrors, roof, and wiper blades thoroughly.
  • Don’t rely too much on the navigator; trust your eyes.
  • Drive slowly enough to maintain control of the car.
  • Learn to use headlights (high and low beam and fog lights) and understand when to use them.
  • Keep a safe distance from the car in front, as braking distances are long on icy roads.
  • Get to know your car and find out how to keep the windows defrosted.
  • Even if you see reindeer, northern lights, or other interesting sights, don’t stop in the middle of the road. Find a safe place to pull over and ensure safety.
  • Watch out for wild animals, such as reindeer and moose, on the roads.
  • If you plan to get out of the car in the dark, remember that other motorists may not see you. Make yourself visible with reflective vests, which can be bought inexpensively in larger markets, and smaller reflectors are available almost everywhere.

Rent a car from a reliable company. Visit Rovaniemi recommends the following companies forthe 2024-2025 season.

Travel safely in Rovaniemi

A safe visit to the Arctic region is the wish of every traveler. However, it is important to remember a few key points when moving around Rovaniemi and Lapland:

  • If you rent a car, learn how to drive in winter conditions and allow enough time for travel.
  • When walking, be cautious of slippery surfaces and only use designated footpaths. Never walk on the road except at crosswalks.
  • During Kaamos, there is only a short period of daylight each day. Use reflectors so that motorists can see you. Reflectors are available in almost all shops and kiosks in Rovaniemi.
  • Download the 112 app to your phone. You can use it to call the emergency center, and it will help locate you.
  • Never walk on river ice unless a local guide gives you permission. River water flows under the ice, which can be very thin.
  • Dress warmly. Locals wear layered clothing; even regular clothes are sufficient if you wear enough layers. Pay special attention to protecting your hands, feet, head, neck, and face.
